Communication tips with DISC

Working with people is the hardest part of any job, and effectively communicating with people certainly for me, the hardest part of this relationships. Any assistance in enhancing communication effectiveness is worthwhile, i hope.

As a certified DISC practitioner I believe this this tool is valuable to enable people to arrange their thinking and communication behaviour. But  DISC could be initially difficult for people to understand. So- my goal is to make it easy and helpful to you and boost the quality and effectiveness of your communications.

But what do these mean?  Ok- here is a quick way to understand.

First: if you tend to be fast paced and outspoken in your actions, extrovert–  you fall in the top half of the circle.  In contrast, if you tend to be cautious and reflective in nature, more introverted you fall in the bottom half of the circle.

Second:  if you are more warm and accepting in nature, more people orientated, you move to the right half of the circle (from top or bottom).  If you are more questioning and skeptical in nature, more task orientated, you move to the left half of the circle (from top or bottom).  Thus, you end up in one of the four quadrants.

As we have seen in other DISC articles each archetype, D, I, S, C have certain behaviour preferences, and as a result in communicating with each, you can adapt or flex your communication styles to meet their preference. In flexing or adapting you will make yourself

But is there an easy way to remember the summary of these communication preferences

These are…

1) Dominance: these people focus on the what!  And, getting things done.

2) Influence:  these people focus on the who! And, getting things recognized.

3) Steadiness: these people focus on the how!  And, getting along.

4) Conscientiousness: these people focus on the why! And, getting things right.

By understanding the preferences of others communication behaviours you’ll become more adapt at being understood, and thus more effective in communication and in your work.
