So which way does your team go?
As a new boss are you consistent in the messages you send to your team and consistent in also living by those messages? “Walk the talk”, is a simple reminder to also do what you say. I’m a big believer in consistency, and a consistent boss is on the road to becoming a very good boss.
You turn up for the 10am meeting at 10.30 and just carry on- thats ok, right?- you are the boss. Then don’t criticise others when they are late for your meetings too. Don’t decide to leave early and then pass your work to someone to complete while working late. Being a boss isn’t a privilege it carries responsibilities for both completing work and building a strong team.
Your new team members will be looking at you to see what sort of a boss you are. Everything you do and say will be weighed up, so by acting consistently you give a clear message to your new team on what they can expect and how they can work with you.
Think before you speak and act, remember how you have acted in similar situations earlier, and seek to be consistent. Make sure the signs you set are consistent.
